Ideas for a Fun Day – Experience Tartu: Paola (Mexico)

Spring is here and the sun is shining again. As the weather clears up and the flowers bloom it’s natural we want to be outdoors enjoying the good time. However, I admit, I too have thought “there’s just nothing to do” and stayed home lazing around. But I was so WRONG, Tartu is a very active town and there are always things going on. Whether it’s a concert by the river, art exhibition, workshop or a big party. You just have to know where to look, there are a million opportunities to have fun outdoors!

In this post, I will share some of my favorite activities to enjoy with friends, as a couple or by yourself. They are all either free or budget-friendly so enjoy!

Beach Getaway

Tartu is a dynamic and ever-changing town, one day you’re planning your next ski trip and the next the sun is shining and flowers are blooming. Take advantage of those brief moments of warmth and go to the beach! If you would like a quick get-away I personally recommend going to the Swimming Area of the Emajogi. Just a small bike ride or a charming walk away from the city center is this beautiful river beach where you can lay down and enjoy.

Go on a Museum Spree

There is a museum for everyone in Tartu, whether you are an art enthusiast or you would like to have an interactive experience, there is sure to be something you will like. One of the best things to do is to visit the National Museum of Estonia (Eesti Rahva Muuseum in Estonian). As our ambassador Mara mentioned in her detailed appreciation post to the museum, it is a wonderful place to visit where you will learn more about Estonian culture and feel immersed in the exhibitions.

Bowling Is for Everyone

For some unknown reason I never went bowling before coming to Estonia and now I love it! It is a really fun activity everyone can enjoy, no athletic ability needed. There are two options for bowling alleys, FunBowling and O’Leary’s. My go-to is O’Leary’s since they have arcade games and a pool table as well as snacks and drinks.

Explore the City and Find Local Street Art

Tartu is a lively and creative town, you’ll find the creative spirit in every corner of town. One of the more noticeable aspects of this is the strong culture of street art. Tartu is the only city in Estonia where graffiti is allowed and it pays off! Graffiti fans have even created a street art map and our ambassador Mara also has an amazing post on local Street Art, so you can walk around town and experience the best of Tartu’s graffiti.

Try Dance Lessons

Dancing is a great activity and the best way to meet new people. I personally miss dancing to Latin music from back home so I found that joining dance lessons made me get over some of my homesickness. If you are not sure if you’re up for the commitment yet, you can always ask for a tryout! In LatinPassion Dance Studio you can get a trial week to see if you like it.

Visit the Theater

The Vanemuine Theater in Tartu will always have something to surprise you.It has a varied repertoire, from operas to beautiful ballet as well as comedy and drama performances . I even had the chance to watch a play of one of my favorite movies,  “Mamma Mia!”  with English subtitles! It was such an amazing experience and I highly recommend it to everyone.

Bar Hopping in Tartu

Nightlife in Tartu is vibrant and fun, understandable given it’s a student city. While it might not be great in the long run, bar hopping is really popular around the world and you can do the same in Tartu! It definitely helps that most of the pubs and clubs are within walking distance from each other. The indisputable student’s favorite, Möku, is always a good choice. Have fun and be safe!

Coffee Culture Is Big in Tartu

Coffee is a big deal here, there are plenty of coffee shops to choose from.I know some people that are loyal to one place or another! It’s a classic spot to have a date or catch up with friends. Some of the most popular places include, Karlova Kohv in the beautiful neighborhood of Karlova, Werner, right next to the University’s main building and Säde, near the city center.

Have a picnic by the river

Alongside the Emajõgi river, you will find green areas to sit down and enjoy nature. Bring a blanket to sit on, some snacks, and good company! You will find that the riverside often has bands playing, bars open, and a lot of people enjoying the sunny days.

I also recommend checking the Visit Tartu page regularly and keeping an eye out on Facebook for events posting (parties, cultural gatherings and more) as well as pages for international people in Tartu. Believe me, there is always something interesting in Tartu!
