Everybody has different needs and preferences when choosing a place where to study for everyday classes, while they are writing their assignments, or getting ready for exams. Some people can concentrate in noisy, public places, while others would mind the quiet, relaxed environment. Luckily, the city of Tartu offers spots for both types of people.
I am the kind of person who always likes to change the place and environment while studying. I have several favorite places which I would like to share with you in this blog, maybe one of them will become yours as well.
University Library
Library is the place where most of the students are going and getting ready for their classes. But I have my favorite spots there, which make me relax, mobilized and motivated to study and not to be distracted.
You can find this corner on the third floor, on the right side from the main stairs. I love this place, because it’s quiet most of the time, with lots of green plants around and big windows close to me. While sitting comfortably on the bench, I love to have a break and look at the sky from time to time (especially when it’s blue and sunny).
This is my second favorite spot there: the music department of our University on the 3rd floor, at the end of the 1st Reading Room. I like going here when I would prefer to stay alone and totally concentrated, because this place is mostly empty and the atmosphere is super relaxing. Additionally, you can listen to some music from different countries from time to time.
My favorite café in Tartu
I did not know about this small café until a friend of mine took us to this place. The café is situated on Poe 10, which is basically the same street as Kalev chocolate shop, but most people have not noticed it as it’s on the other, opposite edge of this street. I love it for many reasons: It’s quiet and not overcrowded, the owner is super nice and friendly with good taste of music. But the most important reason is that it sells coffee, tea, chocolate and other products- all of them labelled as fair trade. So, while you enjoying your drink or sweet, you know that every single cent paid by you will be fairly distributed among companies and workers.
Reval Café
I love this spot mostly because of its convenient location, right at the heart of the city. Besides, they have delicious hot chocolate and quite comfortable furniture, as well many sockets for my ‘problematic’ computer and wide windows, in case you would love to explore the people and the speed of the town outside like me, during study breaks.
Botanical Garden
This is one of my favorite places in Tartu. The garden is beautiful in all seasons of year, but due to weather conditions I was going there to study only late spring and early autumn. Still, I think it is worth to mention it in this post. If you are a nature lover, like me, and you enjoy fresh air and a green environment while doing your homework, then this place is just perfect for you. Unfortunately, it’s a bit chilling during cold weathers. However, if you have a hard exam and would love to go some very special place, greenhouses inside the botanical garden building are the best for this situation. It is not free of charge and will cost you 2 euros with discount as a student of UT, but onetime payment is really worth for the beauty and the special atmosphere inside.
