My Journey as an International Student Ambassador of the University of Tartu

Hello! My name is Anhelina, and I’m from Ukraine. I’m currently in my third year of studying Business Administration at the University of Tartu, and this is also my third year as an International Student Ambassador (ISA). I applied to the programme during my first year with the simple goal of getting a university hoodie and something extra for my CV. I didn’t expect that it would become such an important part of my life.

The ISA programme is mostly a volunteer-based initiative run by the International Cooperation and Protocol Office at the University of Tartu. It gives international bachelor’s and master’s students the chance to share their experiences and help future students learn more about studying at the University of Tartu and living in Estonia. As ambassadors, we organise events, manage social media pages like the ISA Facebook page, write blog posts, and advise prospective students.

When I first joined the ISA programme, I became part of the Telegram team*. For two consecutive years, I worked with an amazing group of people, and together, we kept the university’s Telegram channel active with weekly updates about student life, events, and helpful tips. It was a great way to develop my organisational skills, learn discipline, and become clear and concise in my writing.

Last year, I was fortunate enough to secure a managerial position as an International Student Advisor. For one year, I was responsible for answering prospective students’ questions via the official ISO email. This role gave me the chance to give back. I remember being in the same position as those students, filled with questions and uncertainty about studying abroad. Helping guide others on their journey was incredibly fulfilling. I even received a scholarship for my work, which was a rewarding recognition of my efforts.

One of the best parts of being an ambassador has been the chance to meet fascinating people and take part in unique opportunities, such as student fairs. A highlight for me was a trip to Riga, Latvia, with my fellow ambassador, Nargiz. We got to share information about the University of Tartu, our study programmes, and our personal experiences as students. What made the trip even more meaningful was the chance to connect with curious prospective students who were eager to embark on their own academic paths.

There have also been so many fun team-building activities that have made my time as an ambassador so memorable. One of my favourite events was the Halloween party at Vincent’s place. The decorations were amazing, and it felt like we’d stepped into a classic U.S. Halloween celebration.

A favourite of mine memory was our trip to the Tartu Observatory. We explored the observatory and learned about its history. Afterwards, we enjoyed a sauna session and some traditional Estonian snacks. Some people even took a dip in the ice-cold water, which was a lot of fun.

A trip to the Alpaca farm and Suur Munamägi, the highest point in Estonia, was one of the best moments in the ISA programme. It was a refreshing day spent in nature, taking a break from the daily routine with my teammates. We fed the alpacas and had great conversations. This was also my first time visiting Suur Munamägi in Southern Estonia, and the breathtaking views made it even more special.

We also had an unforgettable Christmas party on the ice rink, where we sipped mulled wine. Skating under the winter sky with fellow ambassadors and enjoying the festive atmosphere on the Raekoja plats was truly magical.

Even after all these years, we still meet up regularly with ambassadors from previous years. We usually gather for brunch, catching up and reflecting on everything we’ve experienced together. It’s always fun to recall those memories.

As I continue this journey, I look forward to receiving a certificate signed by the Rector along with a recommendation letter from the International Cooperation and Protocol Office. Both will be valuable additions to my CV and future career.
