“Is it even safe in Estonia?” I was asked when I decided to come to Estonia to study. It was summer 2022, just over a few months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
I was going to come with my spouse and my kid, so we had to think carefully before deciding to come. I, personally, as well as my family, were concerned about safety issues as well. Let me share with you what assured me personally that it is totally safe to come to Estonia and live here with my family.
Understanding the geopolitical situation:
Estonia, like many countries in the region, is undoubtedly impacted by the geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine. However, it’s essential to recognise Estonia’s distinct position within this context. As a member of NATO and the European Union, Estonia benefits from robust security measures and alliances, which contribute significantly to its stability and security.
Learning about safety measures in Estonia:
Estonia places a high priority on the safety and well-being of its residents and visitors alike. The country has low crime rates and efficient emergency response systems. Additionally, Estonia maintains a strong commitment to international cooperation, actively collaborating with neighbouring countries and international organisations to uphold peace and security in the region.
Practical Tips for International Students:
While Estonia provides a safe environment for international students, it’s natural to have concerns, especially during heightened global tensions. Here are some practical tips to help international students feel more secure:

While concerns about safety amidst the Russia-Ukraine conflict are valid, international students can find reassurance in Estonia’s commitment to security, its membership in NATO and the EU, and its robust support systems. By staying informed and utilising available resources to make informed decisions, students can embark on their academic journey in Estonia with confidence and peace of mind. And from my side, after living in Estonia for more than 1,5 years, I can firmly say that I am very happy with my choice and that my family and kid are safe here.
