Tartu souvenir shop guide – where to go and what to buy – Temma (Japan)

Christmas is one of the most awaited events of the year. Many international students go back home and spend time with their families. But before that, we must go through the end of the semester: our brains are occupied with assignments, exams, and projects. We can only think about something else when our family says they are waiting for Estonian souvenirs. Where can we buy souvenirs in Tartu? What should we bring back home? Here, I recommend some great places to prepare lovely souvenirs, explore new tastes in Estonia, and even treat yourself to Christmas in Tartu.

“Käsitööpood”

Käsitööpood, or “handicraft shop” in Estonian, has plenty of options for finding Estonian handicrafts. It was first founded as a sheepskin handicraft shop on Saaremaa island, where they have been creating a wide variety of products such as slippers, gloves, and stroller covers. In 2006, they opened a shop next to Tartu’s main square. Here, you can buy cosy handicrafts, accessories, daily goods, etc.

“Kiiks ja Knihv”

Are you not satisfied with ordinary souvenirs? Then “Kiiks ja Knihv” offers something extraordinary; it is so unusual that you will probably be surprised. Among products by local manufacturers, you can find interesting postcards with dark humour, cups, and toys with… Well, you will see.

“Kalevi Šokolaadipood”

This is the place for those who have a sweet tooth. Kalev chocolates are everywhere in Estonia, and here you can find chocolate products, seasonal offers, marzipan figures, and so on.

“SUVA”

Founded initially as a ribbon and cord factory in 1919, SUVA makes many different kinds of socks. In the shop, you will probably be overwhelmed by the wide range of socks for hiking in summer, warming in winter, and presents to be stored by Santa Claus. You can find socks with traditional patterns, cute printed characters, and the colours of the Estonian flag.

“Kingiabi OÜ”

Located in the shopping mall Lõunakeskus, Kingiabi OÜ is helpful for those who want to find something Estonian, as the shop name suggests (Kingiabi means gift aid in Estonian). Are you looking for scarves with the colours of the Estonian flag? Are you looking for cups with beautiful pictures of Estonia? Are you looking for T-shirts with the slogan “I love Estonia”? Then this is the right place for you.

“Hää Eesti Asi”

If you forget to buy one more souvenir for your family and friends, then the last opportunity will be while you are waiting for your flight. Across from Gate 2 in the Tallinn Airport, you will see “Hää Eesti Asi,” where you can find almost any kind of souvenirs, from organic foods by local farmers to handmade accessories. But be careful; always mind how much space you have in your carry-on luggage.
