Estonia, the Country We Love! – Danni (China)

My name is Danni, and I am a bachelor’s student majoring in Estonian and Finno-Ugric Linguistics at the University of Tartu (UT). I moved to Estonia around 3.5 years ago, and I am originally from Beijing, China.

Since 2016, I have been in touch with the Estonian language, starting from my gymnasium in Beijing. After two years of language study, I was fortunate to join the exchange student programme between my gymnasium and UT. The journey from Beijing to Tallinn was quite long and arduous, taking around 15 hours by air with an additional two-hour bus ride. Despite the tiring trip, I enjoyed my time in Estonia so much! This experience solidified my decision to continue studying in Estonia after graduating from the gymnasium.

Apart from my academic pursuits, Estonia has become a second home to me, where I crossed paths with cherished friends whom I hold deeply in my heart, where I have been graced by so many responsible teachers, not only teaching me knowledge in classes but also extending their care in friendship. Luckily, I also have found my partner from here, with whom I wish to walk hand in hand until our hair is grey. I have never felt like a passenger; instead, I feel safe and loved. So, what do I like about Estonia? The first thing that came to my mind was the people here. For home is not mere bricks and mortar; no, home is where your heart finds peace amongst those who are your beloved.

The second aspect I adore about Estonia, (which you may relate to as a student from a big city) is the peaceful and serene environment. The tranquillity offered here provides a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of city life. In spring, I love to sit next to the Emajõgi, to observe the migratory birds fly back from the south; in summer, I love the flaming campfire shining up during the midsummer night; In autumn, I love the golden fields on the side of the road flashed by my window; in winter, I love that the ground is covered with fluffy white snow, like the whole world is decorated with marshmallows. Everything here brings me back to my childhood when life was slow, with no pressure.

Estonia, despite its small size, has a warm and welcoming culture. As someone who also lives in an apartment, I highly recommend greeting your neighbours when you encounter them in the hallway. Saying “Tere” (hello in Estonian) is a simple thing that fosters a sense of community. In Beijing, I think in most big cities, the opposite. I lived in the same apartment building for nearly seven years without knowing my neighbours. Avoiding any interaction was the norm there. Therefore, I really appreciate the warmness that was given to me. It even shaped me into a better person who is no longer afraid of eye contact and is brave enough to talk with strangers.
