Twilight in Tartu – Vlada (Uzbekistan)

Autumn is here, and that means the new academic year is also here. Soon enough, the warm summer days start slowly disappearing, and we’ll have to deal with the local climate. However, this time can be used for city exploring, especially as many of you have just arrived. Inspired by the blog about places in Tartu that recreate Wes Anderson’s films’ atmosphere, I decided to make a similar selection, but with a different and more autumn-like theme.

You could say that Twilight has been given a second life lately. We reflect on this saga that we loved (or hated) as teenagers and try to find new facets or problematic facts. Regardless of personal opinions, many would agree that the atmosphere conveyed through colour, landscape, and music is truly mesmerising. The atmosphere of a small town with stunning nature, cosy places, and a cloudy blue haze… This description of Forks sounds just like…Tartu! So, here are 5 places with a Twilight atmosphere that helped me survive cold seasons by romanticising them.

  1. Prom Gazebo VS Botanical Garden Gazebo

You probably remember the gazebo from the prom scene. Slow dance, garland lights, some greenery…sounds like a perfect romantic moment. Luckily, there’s a gazebo in the botanical garden in Tartu that can take you to this moment. You’ll need a ticket to visit the greenhouses while walking around the gazebo and different plants, is free of charge, so play Flightless Bird, American Mouth, ask the chosen one, and make sure there are no Victorias around.

  1. The Cullen House VS Delta

It sounds like an unobvious comparison, but one day when I was writing my thesis on the Delta campus, I realised that the large windows overlooking the river and the trees around reminded me of something I already saw. Later I realised that this view was similar to the house with the big glass windows where Cullens lived. Perhaps the fact that I didn’t study in Delta and therefore didn’t spend time there regularly made me see the similarity because my eyes weren’t blurred. If you look at the Delta from the street, the resemblance is even greater because you can see trees just like the ones around the Cullens’ house.

  1. The forest in Forks VS Meenikunno

Estonia has a huge number of forests, that’s a fact. However, the forest in front of the Meenikunno bogs is mesmerising. In addition, so that you don’t have to jump through the trees like Bella and Edward, there is a safe hiking trail

  1. The Cliff VS Taevaskoja rock

The two cliffs look pretty similar, but under the cliff at Taevaskoja, you won’t find the huge depths and crazy waves that nearly killed Bella. What’s more, people don’t usually swim there, so you can just sit in a clearing under the cliff with a hiking trail on top, imagining the werewolves around.

  1. Flower Clearing VS Clearing at Baeri 11

Walking around Tartu one day, I came across a clearing that reminded me of two things at the same time. Firstly, its shape reminded me of one of the meteorite craters that are surprisingly plentiful in Estonia. Although I cannot say whether the clearing at Baeri 11 is such a crater, its shape resembles one, and I wonder why. The second association with the clearing was related to the topic of this blog, as the monochrome green meadow reminded me of the clearing scene in Forks.

Of course, to some, these comparisons may seem detached. However, if you are a fan of any aesthetic, there is always a chance to find its pieces around, especially in a new place. I think it’s important to take a new place in that light to transform the total newness around you into something inspiring rather than scary. Plus, it’s a great way to stay in a positive mood when you can imagine that the weather and darkness around you are just a blue filter like the one that the Twilight creators applied to the shots.
